Seven Maori Boys in Court
Seven Maori youths appeared in a group this morning in the Children’s Court before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., and an associate J.P., Mrs. Ada E. Beer, on a series of charges of theft and receiving stolen gooclts, each being admonished and ordered to pay 2s 6d. The charges were held over for six months to allow the youths to make amends for their offences. The informations concerned mostly the theft of foodstuffs and also torches from cars during the course of a dance in the country. Senior-Sergeant J. F. H. Macnamara said one of the boys had found torches in cars at the dance and had given them to others who knew how he had obtained them. In addition they had taken preserved fruit and soft drinks from a store. Mr. Luxford explained that they could have a great variety of honest fun without breaking the law, and that j other forms of fun would not be followed by serious consequences.
