PIGEON FLYING

OLD BIRD RACES FIRST SERIES END The Poverty Bay Central Homing Pigeon Society /lew the last race of the first scries for old birds from Christchurch during the week-end.

The race was over an airline distance of 440 miles and the birds were liberated at approximately 5 a.m. The winner, T. Crosby’s blue chequer hen, recorded a velocity of 1195.0yd5. per minute. Only seconds separated the placed birds and these were the only ones 'timed in on the day. The winner’s time of lOhr. 4fimin. 14sec. was a record for the distance.

The detailed results were:—T. Crosby's Silver Star, 1195.0yd5. per min., 1; M. Roydes’ Midnight, 1194.8 yds. per min., 2; T. Crosby’s Banjo, 1192.8yd5. per min., 3; R. Hall’s bird. 1192.5yd5. per min., 4; R, Hall’s bird, 1190.1yds. per min., 5. Also competed: J. McLean, M. Cook, A. McLauchlan, and A. O’Neill. Napier Race A flock race flown from Napier resulted in a win for A. O’Neill’s King Peter with an excellent velocity of 1675.8yd5. per min. The bird covered the distance in 1 hr. 28min. The results were: —A. O’Neill’s King Peter, 1675.2 yds. per min., 1; C. Waldock's Red Wings, 1658.1yd5. per min., 2; M. Roydes’ True Keeper, 1646.1yd5. per min., 3; A. McLauchlan’s Strong Boy, 1633.3yd5. per min., 4; T. Crosby's Miss Peters, 1626.4yd5. per min., 5. Also competed: M. Cook, R. Hall, J. McLean, M. Cook and D. Somerville.

Next Saturday the second series 'will commence with a race from Napier.
