cabled a resolution to the Secretary of State at Washington, Mr. Cordell Hull, asking for increased support for the maintenance of the American position in Shanghai.

The Shanghai correspondent of the United Press states that reliable British military authorities have advised the Shanghai Municipal Council that they are unable to provide additional troops to defend the International Settlement border, due to the extent if the present responsibilities. The people of the settlement concluded that any important measure of military aid must come from the United States.

A Tokio message quotes a Domci Agency report that the Chinese Government has made important proposals to the United States Ambassador in China, Mr. Johnson, possibly in connection with overtures for American mediation in the Chinese-Japan* cse war.
