EXPORT TRADE DRIVE

BRITAIN NOT INACTIVE GERMAN COMPETITION (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Oct. 24. When attention was called in the House of Commons to the intensified campaign for the promotion of German trade in Holland and the Scandinavian countries, the president of the Board of Trade, Mr. O. Stanley, replied: “I have received reports of the nature indicated. The Government is fully alive to the importance of promoting United Kingdom trade to the countries mentioned and other

overseas markets. With that object, my department is opening discussions with representatives of the exporting industries with a view to facilitating their operations. lam in constant touch with the appropriate departments on matters affecting the export trade.”

Asked further if he was aware that German industrial organisations were circulating firms in neutral countries offering facilities for assisting their trade as against the trade of Britain, Mr. Stanley observed: “There is a certain amount of doubt as to whether the Germans are living up to promises made in those circulars.”

In another answer, the Parliamentary Secretary stated that all possible steps were being taken to maintain and expand exports of British coal.
