SHORT POLICE CHASE
MAORI SENT TO GAOL
INTOXICATED IN CAR
A .short chase by the police last Thursday evening resulted in the appearance in the Police Court to-day of Wi Parana Pati, aged 55, a labourer, on a charge of having been intoxicated while n charge of a motor vehicle.
The accused pleaded guilty, and Mr. J. H. Lux ford, S.M., convicted and sentenced him to gaol with hard labour for a week. The accused’s license was suspended and he was prohibited from obtaining another for a year.
Senior-Sergeant J. F. H. Macnamara, said ihat CorHable Jamieson Lad noticed the vehicle being driven along Gladstone road, the door of the car flapping open in the wind. The constable thought there v as something strange about the driver, and gave chase in a taxi, arresting the accused in Grey street, where the car was being parked. Appearing for the accused, Mr. A. A Whitehead said Pati admitted having had drink at the races, but was not badly affected. There were other people in the car and Pati would not iiavo noticed that the door was open. He had parked his car when the police luestioned him.
