Last Night’s Forecast

General situation: An anti-cyclone covers the North Island, while a vigorous depression is passing to the south.

Forecast: Winds light and variable in the north, otherwise moderate to strong northerly to westerly prevailing, reaching gale force in some exposed positions, a change to southwesterly probable in the far south by to-morrow. Seas: In New Zealand waters, rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, slight or moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate northerly winds and moderate seas in the northern portion, strong westerly winds and rough seas in the southern. Weather: Rain probable in the southern and western districts of the South Island, scattered fails later extending as far north as Taranaki; otherwise fair. Temperatures: Mild and warm, but becoming cooler in the south.

To-day’s North Island Report

Warm temperatures were reported all along the East Coast this morning. The maximum reading was 62 degrees at Castlepoint, while Cape Maria Van Diemen, Tauranga, Gisborne and Napier recorded 61 degrees, East Cape and Cape Palliser 60. Opotiki 59, Auckland 57. and Wellington 57. There was a general decline in the barometric pressure, but the drop was only a few millibars. North-westerly winds predominated. There were light breezes over most of the island, but a l wind of 28 to 33 miles per hour prevailed in the Wellington district. The sea was rough in Cook Strait, but elsewhere slight to moderate. Midday Forecast General situation. —An anticyclone is moving slowly off the North Island, while a depression is located west of the South Island.

Forecast.—-Light to moderate northwest to westerly winds, freshening in southern districts. Weather fair to fine and mild. Seas slight to moderate.
