CRICKET OPENING
SATURDAY’S FIXTURES HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE POVERTY BAY DATES ' NEW YEAR ALLOTED Arrangements for the opening of the season next Saturday were made at last night's meeting of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association’s executive. It was agreed tint tne games should be interrupie 1 shortly before 3 p.m. to enable the president of the association. Mr. V. C. R. IVitford, to perform the official opening Matches on _ the High School ground, it was decided, should stop at 2.50 p.m. and those on the Oval at 2.55 p.m. so as to enable players to be present by 3 o'clock. Following the official opening ceremony, it was arieed that afternoon tea should be served immediately to players from the High School ground to enable them to return as soon as possible to their wickets, while the Ova! games would be resumed straight after the ceremony' un‘ii the sounding of the gong. No 1 and 2 Oval wickets would take their tea first, followed by Nos. 3 and 4 wickets. Challenge Match Advice was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council that Poverty Bay had been allotted New Year dates for the challenge for the Hawke Cun, which is at present held by Waikato. It was stated that one challenge match was to be decided before the Poverty Bay match. It was reported that the groundsman, Mr. W. Parker, had done very effective work on the Oval, and players on the practice wickets stated that the ground was in the best order they had seen for years. It was hoped, therefore, that the wickets would be in excellent playing order on Saturday. Saturday’s Games Matches set down for Saturday were confirmed as follows: — Senior A Grade.—City v. Marist, Oval No. 3; G.H.5.0.8. v. Old Boys, Oval No. 2. Senior B Gride. —United B v. Gisborne Club, Oval No. 1; Marist v. G.H.5.0.8. Blue, Oval No. 4; High School B v. City, High School bath wicket; High S'CLool A v. G.H.5.0.8. While, High School concrete wicket: United A. v. Civil Service, High School Rectory wicket. Mr. J. deV. W. Blathwayt presided at the meeting, at which there were also present: Messrs. R. H. Cook, G. S. Slade, E. Judge, A. E. Bignall, E. .H. Bilhrim and the hon. secretary, Mr. D. A. Wells.
