CARGO HELD UP

FERRY NOT WORKED WATERFRONT DISPUTE MEN AND DEPARTMENT LYTTELTON DELAY (IVr Pit'sls Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Because of a dispute between the Railway Department and the waterside workers employed lay the department regarding the working of the

steamer express Rangatira at Lyttelton yesterday, no cargo was loaded or unloaded from the ship. The vessel was worked on the railway side by permanent railway men from 7 a.m. till 8 a.m. yesterday, which is claimed to be the usual practice after a holiday.

Casual watersiders were engaged to work from 8 a.m., but it is alleged that they declined to work on the grounds that they should have been engaged on Saturday for the 7 a.m. start on Tuesday. The ship’s watersiders were also engaged yesterday morning, but as the cargo could not be handled without the railway watersiders, the former were discharged at midday.

The dispute was then referred to headquarters at Wellington. Because of the holiday on Monday, the Rangatira had very little cargo for discharge. but had a fairly large quantity to load for Wellington. This cargo remained in the trucks on the wharf.
