PROBLEM OF REFUGEES
ROOSEVELT PREDICTION CONCERN OF ALLIES (Reed. Oct 23. noon) NEW YORK. Oct. 22. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times states it is reliably stated that the British and French are most concerned at President Roosevelt’s statement of Tuesday last that when the war ends maybe not 1.000,000 but 10,000,000 to 20,000.000 people will enter the refugee problem.
The correspondent says it is declared in informal representations that one of the objectives of the war is the elimination of the doctrine of racial and religious bigotry, making it unnecessary for citizens to emigrate because of religion or race. Mr. Roosevelt’s statement, it is understood, discomfited Britain and France because they felt it permitted the assumption in Germany that Mr. Roosevelt endorses the Hitler thesis that emigration may be forced. Mr. Myron Taylor is seeking an interview with Mr. Roosevelt to clear misunderstandings. Officials privately suggest that the President’s remarks are misinterpreted if they are taken to support Herr Hitler’s thesis.
