DIMINISHING STREAM
GERMAN EFFICIENCY SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT ; (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Oct. 21. Commenting on the deterioration of German scientific output due to the application of Nazi doctrines in Germany, Sir Thomas Holland, vieeChanceilor of Edinburgh University, and a famous minerologist, said that during the last six years scientific workers in German universities had turned out from their research laboratories a gradually diminishing stream of material.
Six or seven years ago no scientific man in the world would dare pass over publications of research institutes in Germany, but. to-day the volumes put out had diminished to a small fragment of their former size, and the quality of the residue was negligible.
One could predict quite clearly that neglect of fundamental research in science and of the search for truth for its own sake must be followed by a degeneration in technical efficiency. That certainly would be followed by degeneration in military efficiency.
