TWO CHARGES LAID NORTH CLYDE ASSAULT (Special to tho Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Stated to have assaulted a billiardroom proprietor" at North Clyde on Friday, a Maori, Butler Thompson, aged 32, appeared before Messrs. J. Corkell and V. E. Winter, J.P.’s, in the Police Court on Saturday morning, charged with using obscene language and also with assaulting Ebenezer Andrew Mitchell.
Sergeant D. Clark said that Friday was a "field-day,” being a pay-out day for pensions. Mitchell had chased some Maoris out of the rear of his billiardroom, Thompson then assaulting Mitchell and repeatedly using the obscene language complained of. The billiard-room was a decently conducted place. Mitchell was a crippled man and had some difficulty in evading the accused.
Thompson alleged that lie did no! assault Mitchell, but only threatened him.
On tiie first charge the defendant was convicted and fined £5, in default one month's gaol, and on the second was convicted and fined £2. in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Time was allowed for payment of the fines.
