BEEF CATTLE BREEDS
REMARKABLE DISPLAY HAWKE’S BAY SHOW GISBORNE SUCCESSES (Special to the Herald.) HASTINGS, this day. Both the Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cattle sections at the Hawke’s Bay Show attracted great quality and big entries, and the judges commented upon the remarkable display before them.
In addition to the awards published yesterday, Messrs. Hutchinson Bros, won the Now Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association’s special prize for the best Hereford male or female in the Show, Waihuka James ,12th being the animal to gain the award. The T. W. G. Tombleson Cup for the best Polled Hereford bull was won by Mr. F. E. Humphreys’ Bosun Gem. Commenting upon the Herefords, the judge, Mr. E. E. Jefferson,'Wairoa, said the entry was the strongest he had ever had the pleasure of judging, and taken right through it was a remarkable display of some of the best the breed had to offer. Best Hereford Entry
“It is certainly the best entry of Hereford cattle I have seen at the Hawke’s Bay Show, and I have been coming here as an exhibitor and spectator since 1910,” he said. The champion bull he described as a very fine animal, almost as good as one could get, while the champion cow was, in his opinion, without any doubt the best female of the breed in New Zealand to-day.
In the yearling hull class, one of the strongest entries in the Show came forward and the first and second prize animals, of Mr. F. E. Humphreys. Ngatapa, and Mr. E. (M. Cranstone. Fordell, respectively, were outstanding. Taken throughout, the quality of the entries was exceptionally even, and even with the big entries headed up in every class, Mr. Jefferson stated that he had some difficulty in separating the prize-winners. For the most part the entries were particularly well brought out, although in odd cases they were carrying almost too much condition.
Aberdeen Angus Heifers Mr, J. E. Hewitt, Mangamaire, who judged the Aberdeen Angus section, said that the entry of blacks was most pleasing. Probably the strongest class, that he had seen in any show-ring in New Zealand was the yearling heifer class. They were a very even lot and as a class would be difficult to excel. In the female classes lie had had a hard task in sonarating the winners in some eases, all the entries being strong and ol' the desirable type for raising high quality animals. A Gisborne judge at the Show. Mr. H. S. Tovev, Muriwai. who was deputising for Mr. E. R. Black, judged the natural conditioned Romney ewes, and found the general quality well up to standard, although several of the exhibits were inclined to be narrow in the nose and the hindquarters weak.
