PAYCHEQUE STOLEN
TAKEN FROM P.O. BOX CASHED SOON AFTER SUM OF £123 INVOLVED (X’ur Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A pay cheque for £123 was stolen some days ago from a box in the Chief Post Office and cashed at a local bank early the same morning. The cheque, which was posted from the head office of the firm in Wellington, was for the payment of wages and commission. It is understood that the cheque, an open one, was placed in a post office box on Sunday night and was 'removed some time before the following morning, being cashed at a bank soon after the hour of opening.
The firm did not at first realise thj)t the theft had taken place, the management believing that the cheque had missed the mail. Later, however, inquiries revealed that it had been cashed soon after it was stolen.
