SUGAR PRICE RAISED

WHOLESALE CHARGE RETAILERS’ PROTEST SMALL PROFIT MARGIN (Per Press Association.)' WELLINGTON, this day. An advance of £3 16s a ton in the price of sugar was notified to wholesalers in Wellington on Monday, but in accordance with the Government’s statement the price to the public is to remain at 4d per lb. Retailers contend that the 4d per lb. does not allow them a margin of profit sufficient to cover overhead costs, and a meeting of all sections of the trade, including the Master Grocers’Association in whicli the chain store companies will be represented, have been called for to-night to discuss the position. One grocer said the price landed in store worked out at £1 Os lid and 4d per lb. would return £1 2s Bd, which provided a margin smaller than would be absorbed by overhead charges. Fourpence-half-penny per lb. was the lowest price at which retailers could afford to handle sugar.
