FIVE FOR ONE
OWNER’S BIG SCOOP MR. FITZGERALD’S WINS TURK CLUB RESULTS SMILING PERSONALITY The outstanding feature of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's first spring racing day was the success of the Fitzgerald stable, which won five races out of the card of seven. Mr. E. Fitzgerald, one of the principal pillars of the sport in this district, won the Nick’s Head Handicap with Native Song, the Makaraka Handicap with Dc Friend, the Endeavour Scurry with Native Chief, the Roseland Hack Handicap with Queen’s Dream, and the October Hack Handicap with Smiling Personality. In the two other races contested yesterday the stable was represented by place-getters, Small Boy being second in the Discovery Hurdles Handicap, and Golden Blonde being third in the Flying Handicap. The outstanding winning owner and his trainer, I. Tinsley, received warm congratulations on their successes, all of which were well earned. ■ The stable’s entries were turned out in uniformly good shape and competed in fairly good company in their respective races. On the day the tolalisator showed a falling-off of £632 10s in aggregate investments, this being accounted for by the fact that two of the races were four-horse affairs, and in one or two others the number of starters was just sufficient to provide for second dividends. The amount invested on the seven races yesterday was £4308 10s, as against £4940 on the corresponding day last year. Native Chief Finishes Strongly
The Fitzgerald stable’s third winner for the day came to light in the Endeavour Scurry. There was a field of 10 runners, and not all got off well, Hunting Dawn and Millions being well back from the outset. Taharakau got a perfect start, and was two lengths out in front of Kintyre and Cymetic after a furlong, with Native Chief at the head of a group of runners, well strung out over half a furlong. Taharakau was going well round lo the turn for home, with Cymetic and No Wonder the nearest of the others, and Native Chief fourth. No Wonder ran wide at the turn and lost a lot of ground, Native Chief coming through the middle to challenge Taharakau at the distance. Taharakau battled it out well for half the last furlong, but compounded quickly when Native Chief got alongside him, the latter going on to win by a length. Waikawa was third, a length and a half behind Taharakau, and No Wonder, who made a good recovery in the straight, was a close fourth. Kincarole. Cymetic, River Tide, Millions, Kintyre, and Hunting Dawn was the order of the others past the judge. Lovelilt Beaten in Hard Tussle Once again the Fitzgerald colours finished in front in the Roseland Hack Handicap. With a field of six runners, Lovelilt got out in front from a good start, with Queen’s Dream and Gay Laura closest of the others, and Miss Blue fourth. Royal Stuart and Kahuroa were slow off the mark, but picked lip quickly, and the field was well bunched behind Lovelilt at four furlongs. From that point on, however, Lovelilt, Gay Laura and Queen’s Dream drew away from the others, and opened up a gap of three or four lengths by the time they turned into the straight. Commencing the turn, Queen's Dream started her run, and though she swung wide she was close up to Lovelilt when they straightened out for home. Lovelilt put up a good tussle, but Queen’s Dream was moving smoothly and just got her head in front in the last stride. Gay Laura, always well placed, could not stay with Queen’s Dream and Lovelilt in the straight, and finished third, two lengths hack. Royal Stuart was fourth, Kahuroa fifth, and Miss Blue last.
October Furnishes Good Tussle
The fifth win of the day for Mr. E. Fitzgerald was delivered by Smiling Personality in the last race of the day, the October Hack Handicap. She was first out from the barrier and was never headed, though at one stage Mimicry seemed likely to give her a hard battle. Mimicry and Diana Tetrix were the closest of the other five for the first furlong, with Proclamation fourth and Minnow fifth, but both Mimicry ancl Proclamation fell back between four furlongs and three furlongs from home, and had to make up a good bit of ground, Proclamation coming from last place to third in the run home. Diana Tetrix looked promising at the turn, but faded out, and Mimicry came through on the rails to till second place, a length behind Smiling Personality, while Proclamation also improved rapidly to take third money, close up to Mimicry. The order of the others past the judge was Diana Tetrix, Minnow and Plenteous.
