Lady Wood, wife of Sir Kingsley Wood, Secretary of State for Air, was to have christened the carrier in the orthodox manner, but, breaking her cradles and crushing her timber balks,. the Formidable plunged unaided into the water. Hundreds of workmen and thousands of spectators had a miraculous escape, only one woman being killed and 15 people injured.
