CENTENNIAL PLANS

WAITANGI CELEBRATIONS DECISION TO PROCEED A conference of the executive and elders of the Ngapuhi tribe held at Kaikohe decided to proceed with the Maoris’ participation in the Waitangi centennial celebrations next February. It was reported that the carved meeting-house at Waitangi had been completed and that the majority of the carvers had left for Wellington, where they would work on a Maori meeting-house for display at the Centennial Exhibition. A decision was also made regarding the completion of the Ngapuhi canoe for use in the centennial celebrations. This canoe, partly completed, is now lying at Opua, in the Bay of Islands, and two young men of the tribe who are masters at their craft, having worked on the Waitangi meetinghouse, will now set about the carving of -the canoe. Another canoe now at Kerikcri is nearing completion.
