Major Wilfred Searle, of the Salvation Army in Napier, has been advised by the military authorities of his promotion from 4th to 3rd class in the chaplains' department. Mr. H. J. Grieve, Hastings, is still an inmate of Royston Hospital due to the accident he met with some weeks ago, when he was injured by a lorry. His progress is favourable, but slow.

After a short visit to Wairoa, Inspector D. Cameron, officer in charge of the Hawke’s Bay police district, returned to Napier bn TuesdaySpecial. Cons!able H. Hunter, the Gisborne delegate, will leave next Monday to attend the conference of the New Zealand Police Association, which will take place in Wellington on Wednesday.

Mr. Joseph D. Birrell, general manager in New Zealand of. the Westinghouse Electric International Company (New Zealand), Limited, for 1G years, has been promoted to general manager of the Far Eastern zone, with headquarters at Manila. Mr. Jas. A. Robb, Gisborne, who was to have left London on his return to New Zealand early in September, has advised relatives by air mail that he was to sail by the Cape of Good Hope route to Sydney, leaving Tilbury docks late in September. He expected to reach New Zealand early in November. The appointment of Miss M. C. Fcngeley, M.H.Sc., to a temporary position on the staff of the Gisborne High School, was confirmed at last evening’s meeting of the High School' Board of Governors. Miss Fcngeley. who took up the position on October 1, will remain at the school until the end of the year. An exchange of pulpits will take place this week-end between the ministers of the Gisborne and Napier Baptist churches. The Rev. Rex Gold smith, Napier, arrived at Gisborne this afternoon to spend a week here, while the Rev. E. W. Batts, the local pastor, journeyed to Napier yesterday and subsequently will pay a visit to Wellington. Mr. Goldsmith, who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Goldsmith. Fitzherbert street, will conduct both the morning and evening services in his home church on Sunday.
