CARNIVAL QUEEN

CENTENNIAL POLLING CANDIDATES HONOURED RECOGNITION OF EFFORTS HAPPY SOCIAL FUNCTION Candidates who took part in the centennial queen carnival in Gisborne, decided a fortnight ago in favour of the sports committee nominee, Miss Norma Henderson, were the principal guests at a social gathering held in Le Grand Cafe last evening, and sponsored by the Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club. This organisation conducted the carnival on behalf of the Provincial Centennial Council, and the gathering was held in lieu of the formal coronation ceremony which had been planned, but which was abandoned owing to the war. The winning queen candidate was presented with a handsome wristlet watch to mark her success in the campaign, and the other candidates, Misses Wiki Tureia. Maori nominee. Patricia Oakden, R.S.A. nominee, and Peggy Lange, Public Service nominee, each receiving a handsome necklace of pearls to mark their participation. Affected by the War The presentations were made by the chairman of the carnival committee, Mr. B. S. Brec, who pointed out that the holding of a coronation ceremony had been carefully considered, but had been abandoned for reasons which lie did not need to emphasise. Owing to the outbreak of war, Mr. Bree continued, the minds of the people of Gisborne were turned completely away from centennial activities just when the carnival campaign promised the most fruitful results. The carefully built up organisations connected with the carnival were unable, unfortunately, to produce the success their efforts deserved. However, in view of the circumstances, the carnival could not be looked upon as a failure, since the centennial funds for this district would benefit to the extent of £3OO, inclusive of the Government subsidy. Much Hard Work

To obtain this result,, a great deal of hard work ana enthusiasm had been expended, and, on behalf of the Thirty-Thousand Club, he expressed his appreciation to those who had accepted nomination in the ballot, to their respective committees for the work they had accomplished, and to all who had contributed to the funds in any way. Mr. Bree also offered appreciation to the press for the assistance given in the campaign. , In declaring Miss Norma Henderson, Gisborne’s centennial queen. Mr. Bree offered her congratulations and good wishes. He also mentioned particularly the enthusiasm shown by the family and friends of Miss Wiki Tureia, second in the ballot, whose effort would be better understood, he thought, if he explained that during (he latter portion of the campaign Miss Tureia’s committee had been unable to function. TTc also congratulated Misses Oakden and Lange upon the gallant fight they and their committees had put up.
