MAJESTIC THEATRE (FINAL DAY: “HEI (TIIvI” AND TAKiTIMI! MAORI ENTERTAINERS Enacted entirely by Maoris and staged in natural settings in the Isle of Ghosts in New Zealand, “Hoi Tiki” showing finally to-night at the Majestic Theatre, is certainly both primitive and passionate. Primitive, that is to say, in the naivete of its legendary story, and passionate both in the unabashed ardency of the two young lovers and the war-like dementia which seizes one section of the natives when they realise they have been duped. At the evening session the Takitimu Maori Entertainers will present a programme of poi dances, action songs and hakas. •-.To-morrow: Zane Grey’s •‘Heritage ot the Desert," and ‘TJnilore.'mw Doctor”— "Heritage of the Desert," which opens to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre, is the filmisation of Zane G rev's western classic, spinning the fortunes of an easterner who goes west to find out what has happened lo his lands, and why a once prosperous estate is now worthless. The easterner, realistically portrayed by Donald Woods, lias his suspicion confirmed when an attempt is made upon his life. He later finds out that C. Henry Gordon, his representative, has not only been cheating him of a fortune, but that he has been using Ids name as a shield for his other schemes. Robert Barrat. an upright cowman, rescues Woods after Gordon's gunman lias given him up for dead. The pious rancher and his lovely daughter, Evelyn Venable, nurse the easterner back to health. Meanwhile. Woods and Evelyn find they are attracted to each other. This becomes too apparent to Paul Guilfoylo, treacherous ward of the kindly Barrat. Others in a well-chosen cast are Russel I-laydcn, Sidney Toler, Paul Fix and Willard Robertison. The Zane Grey thriller was directed by Lesley Selander and produced for Paramount by Harry Sherman. The associate feature, "Undercover Doctor," is based on one of the many actual episodes of the G-Men's fight against the United States’ desperadoes, as recorded by J. Edgar Hoover in his book, "Persons in Hiding." The Paramount crime film tells of a conspiracy involving a brilliant but weak-willed surgeon, a. building contractor who poses as a pillar of society, and a gang of ruthless killers. The surgeon becomes the undercover doctor for the criminals. Louis King's direction plus the .good acting by a fine troupe, consisting of Lloyd Nolan, Janice Logan, J. Carrol Nnish, Heather Angel. Broderick Crawford and Robert Wilcox, make "Undercover Doctor" an unusually exciting evening's entertainment. Also showing is chapter 10 of the thrilling serial "Buck Rogers."
