TECHNICAL EDUCATION BUSINESS COMMUNITY BOARD’S APPEAL The Gisborne High School Board of Governors decided last evening to make a drive among members of the business community for a more active interest in the technical education facilities at the school. In his monthly report the rector, Mr. J. Hutton, mentioned that the evening classes for the year were nearing their conclusion, and he added: — “While there has been a 50 per cent increase in these classes since we assumed control, Gisborne lags fai behind towns of similar size in respect to the demands for such classes. “Individual employers do not seem to interest themselves in the general training of their employees to the extent that they do in the south. That is one factor only, however. The plumbing employers set a good example. Gisborne this year had 222 individual evening class pupils making about 480 class attendances. The number of individual pupils at evening classes in various other towns was: Napier, 239; Hasten ton, 303; New Plymouth. 335; Palmerston. 074; Invercargill, 002; Timaru, 3G2; Nelson, 380.” Mr. J. H. Sunderland spoke of the splendid work that had been accomplished by the rector since the board took over the control of the technical school and of the value of the facilities: provided. He suggested that the board members should participate in a drive among the members of the business community for a greatci support for the classes. The need for educating employers was stressed by Mr. Hutton, who pointed out that if employers were to take their juniors “under their wing” and encourage them to impiove theii education, it would result in advancement for the young people and benefit to the employers. Mr T. Todd endorsed Mr. Sunderland’s suggestion, and it was agreed to do what was possible in the matter.
