POSSIBLE BID ON SIXTY-MILE FRONT
ASSAULT MADE ON LINE OF FOUR MILES DRIVE SOON HALTED BY FRENCH FIRE (Elec. Tel. Copyright.—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct, 17, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 10. Messages from Paris state that the French are completing ail preparations to resist a large-scale attack on a 60-mile front between the Moselle and the Hard Forest, hut .the only development, according to the official war communique, was the launching of a German assault on a four-mile front east of the Moselle, supported by artillery fire. The Germans occupied Schnecberg, on the heights of which the French had a light line of observation posts supported by 1 land mines. The enemy attack was caught under the French fire and halted and withdrew to the north of Apach, a village which they had momentarily penetrated. A communique issued in Berlin by the German High Command does not mention the above operation, but merely announces that slight fighting activity was experienced with “weak harrassing French fire.” The communique adds that the aerial activity was slight.
