The assertions are based upon j I alleged remarks by the chief ollicer, i i Mr. Copeland. Anderson stated that : | the department had received several | j scores of affidavits from passengers. | | The American Secretary of State, \ j Mr. Cordell Hull, told press represen- j I tatives that Anderson’s statement was ■ the first intimation from any source' j that the Athenia carried guns. He . i promised to publish the full details , j when the departmental inquiry was | completed.
