DAMAGE ON FARM
FIERCE WHIRLWIND COWSHED UNROOFED Much damage was done on the farm of Mr. T. M. Grant, of Thornton, Bay of Plenty, by a whirlwind, which raced across from the sea, unroofing a cowshed and damaging the residence. The whirlwind was accompanied by exceptionally heavy hail. Tops were torn from gum trees and cabbage trees. Sheets of iron from the cowshed were carried up 100 ft. in the air and thrown down 20 chains away. A gate was lifted off its hinges and a power pole was pulled out of the ground and snapped into pieces, which, with timbers from the roof, were driven into the ground as though by a giant hammer. Mr. Grant was in his maize crib with his small son and when the whirlwind roared across the farm he put the boy down in a corner, covered him with sacks and then lay across his body. Fortunately tlie blast missed the crib. The milking machinery in the shed was not damaged and the current was quickly restored.
