EXPORT VEGETABLES
GISBORNE ACTIVITY UNEMPLOYED LABOUR DOMINION WAR EFFORT Proposals to grow vegetables for export as part of the war effort have been made to various local bodies, which are being asked to co-operate with the provision of land and the appointment of a representative to s district committee. Unemployed labour was being used in some iastances. When the. proposal was placed before the Cook County Council to-day, Cr. G. V. Smith was appointed to the committee. Cr. C. Tietjen urged that an appeal should be made for farmers to grow peas and onions for export, these being practically the only vegetables the Gisborne district would be able to export. Cr. J. E. Benson said that a number of idle railway sections in the district might be utilised for the purpose. The county clerk, Mr. F. T. Robinson, said that he had noted one county section which might have been used, but he had found since that this would not be available now. He knew of no other county area that might be suitable.
