The Rev. J. D. and Mrs. Hodgson, Te Karaka, visited Napier last week, Mr. Hodgson attending the Waiapu diocesan synod. Mr. J. G. Appleton returned to Te Karaka yesterday after being present at the annual meeting of the 'Waiapu diocesan svriod in Napier. Mr. Hector McDonald lias been appointed general manager of Sharland and Company, Limited, wholesale druggists, in succession to Mr. Bruce Smith, who has resigned. Mr. McDonald has been manager of the Wellington warehouse of the company since 1931. The Bishop of Wellington the Rt. Rev. H. Sf. Barbe Holland, has decided to return to New Zealand at an early opportunity according to advice received by the vicar-general, Archdeacon W. Bullock. The bishop expects to arrive at Wellington late next month, or* early in December. Advice has been received in Gisborne that Mr. C. G. Bayliss, jun., has volunteered for service in the R.A.A.F. in Melbourne and that Mr. Noel Bayliss offered his services in the artillery in Newcastle, N.S.W. Both these young Gisborne men are sorts of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Bayliss, Fox street, Gisborne. An announcement that the secretary, Captain J. W. Bain, might be called up for service with the Ist Hawke’s Bay Regiment prior to the next meeting was made yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. The president, Mr. H. H. De Costa, wished Captain Bain every success and trusted that the time would not come when he would have to leave the shores of New Zealand. Mr. M. ,T, White was appointed to take over the duties of secretary to the chamber during Mr. Bain’s absence. Prior to his leaving Gisborne today to take up his duties in the Intelligence Department at Trentham, to which branch of the service he has been drafted, Mr. C. F. Smith was met yesterday afternoon to be farewelled by members of the Wainui Surf LifeSaving Club. At the recent annual meeting of the club Mr. Smith was appointed vice-captain, and his work in the past had been recognised as valuable also to the movement in the district. The best wishes of club members were extended to Mr. Smith by the club captain, Mr. S. W. Bruce, and Mr. J. R. Beckett. Mr. A. Banfleld spoke on behalf of the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club. A suitable reply was made by the guest of honour.
