TURF CLUB RACES
THURSDAY’S CARD SMALL “OPEN” FIELDS PROSPECTS REVIEWED GOOD CLASS HACKS SCURRY VERY OPEN By “Trenton" The opening clay of the Poverty Bay j Turf Club's meeting will be held on Thursday at the Mnkaraka course. Although the fields are not large, they arc well up to the average, and the class in the hack even's is very strong and should ensure keen competition. The maiden event has filled well and bears a very open aspect. The two open class races, the Flying and Makaraka Handicaps, are disappointing, as Gay Mimic is engaged in both, and whichever he starts in will reduce the other event to a onedividend field. The following is a short review of runners’ recent performances and prospects:— DISCOVERY HURDLES Small Boy, 12.5: Has not started this season. He ran a second and a third at Hawke’s Bay after winning at the last Poverty Bay meeting. He looks well, but was slightly lame on Tuesday. Birkology, 10.3: Finished second to Dc Friend each day at Hawke’s Bay a fortnight ago and has only 41b more than he carried on the second day. A fit horse and should go very well. Paul Robeson, 10.3: Has been off the scene for some time, but judging by appearances has done a solid preparation. He may benefit by a race. Whakao, 9.0: Has a second in a hurdle race Dannevirke to her credit. She may find the distance a bit troublesome, but will be well served as regards horsemanship. Whetu, 9.0: A good jumper who should see out the distance, and what beats him should win. Seven Seas, 9.0: Has not raced for a long time. Dozic Boy, 9.0: Ran fourth at Hawke’s Bay in the hurdles won by De Friend. Royal Stuart, 9.0: Does not appeal. At the weights, Whetu should find Birkology his chief opponent, NICK’S HEAD HACK HANDICAP Native Song, 9.0: A very fit horse and won easily at Hawke’s Bay over six furlongs. He should run a mile, and will be very hard to beat. Mendelssohn. 8.5: Working well, but may need a race. dyihmow, 8.0: In good order, but may prefer the hack “six.” Gay Laura, 8.0: Claims an engagement in the Roseland Hack, but would have to be considered on Hawke’s Bay running if started here. Golden Flame, 7.12: Won at the last Poverty Bay meeting and also over a mile at Napier Park in June. Opoho, 7.12: Ran a good race at Hawke’s Bay and was unlucky. The long straight should be in his favour. Reav Bridge, 7.12: Is working very well and should be prominent. Miss Blue, 7.9: Is engaged in the Roseland Hack. Native Song may find Opolio hardest lo beat FLYING HANDICAP Golden Blonde, 9.0: Has been working in private, and her appearance on the day may influence bettors. Okawa, 8.9: Working soundly and races well fresh. Bold Step, 8.3: Looks in great order and has worked brilliantly. Gay Mimic, 7.10: May prefer the Makaraka Handicap, but would have to be considered if started. Fairy Foe, 7.0: May find the opposition a bit strong. Bold Step and Okawa may fight out the finish. MAKARAKA HANDICAP De Friend, 9.3: Is very well treated as regards weight. With an apprentice's allowance he should bo hard lo beat. Hunting Mint, 7.10: Failed at Hawke’s Bay. Gay Mimic, 7.10: Ran a third and a second at Hawke’s Bay over a mile and a quarter, and may find the shorter distance to his liking. Penny comeq nick, 7.3: Is nicely weighted and working very well. Skyway, 7.0: Ran poorly at Hawke’s Bay meeting. De Friend may prevail over Pennyccmecjuick. ENDEAVOUR SCURRY This race is very open. Millions. Native Chief, Dusky Morn, Waikawa, Kincarolc and Taharakau have all shown ability to gallop. Taharakau has the advantage of having had a race at Hawke's Bay and may be better fancied than Millions and Fitzgerald's elect. ROSELAND HANDICAP Birkology, 11.7: Claims an engagement in the hurdles. Gay Laura, 11.3: On Hawke’s Bay form should be prominent. Lovelilt, 11.0: Is very well and should make a bold bid. Queen’s Dream, 10.12: This mare is well and has a lot of pace. She should be the hardest to beat. Miss Blue, 10.10: May be in need of a race. Kahuroa, 10.7: Is working well but may find some of those above a bit speedy. Royal Stuart, 10.7: Does not appear to have been prepared for a fiat race.
Queen’s Dream and Lovcliit may be the elect of backers OCTOBER HACK HANDICAP Native Song, 9.0: If produced, would be hard to beat. Minnow, 8.3: Working exceptionally well, and should go a good race. Mimicry, 8.2: On recent work should be prominent. Proclamation, 8.1: Failed to gain a place at the Hawke’s Bay fixtuio. Smiling Personality, 8.0: A speedy sort and will be hard to beat. Diana Tetrix, 7.10: Reported to be in good order but has not raced for some time. Queen’s Dream, 7.7: Engaged elsewhere. Plenteous, 7.7: Working well, and if the track happens to be soft will not be without prospects. The Native Song-Smiling Personality bracket may find Minnow the hardest to beat.
