FREEZING SEASON KILLINGS AT KAITI AWAITING INFORMATION LEAD FROM GOVERNMENT EXTRA STORAGE SPACE No information is available yet regarding the commencement of the freezing season at the Kaili works, the absence of information regarding the Government’s intentions in respect of the war-time output delaying any decision on the matter. In tile meantime preparations are oeing made for the enlargement of the storage space, in keeping with the Government’s proposals that accommodation should be made for at least GO per cent of the output, and when work at present in hand is completed the space available at Kaiti should be well above the minimum requirement. The Kaiti freezing works, in a normal season, commences with the killing of lambs at the end of October. The present spring has been a good one for fattening, and while much of the early lambing was later than usual the lambs have made good progress, with the prospect of fair numbers being available by the end of the month. Lack of Information Speaking on the matter to-day, Mr. F. Tolerton, manager of the Gisborne Refrigerating ■ Company, Limited, stated that the freezing industry at present did not know where it stood, as a result, of the lack of .information regarding the Government’s intentions, and until more was known in this respect it was impossible at present to make any announcement of the approximate date for the commencement of killings. An additional insulated store was being provided at present, Mr. Tolerton added, in preparation for the coming season. Already, the Kaiti works had sufficient insulated space for the storage of 180,000 freight carcases, which was vei’y close to the minimum of GO per cent asked for by the Government. Well Over GO Per Cent The new store should be able to accommodate more than 20,000 freight carcases, and when completed the works will have a storage capacity of over 200,000 freight carcases, or well over the 60 per cent margin. At present work is held up by the difficulty of procuring metal piping, and the date for completion is uncertain, but provided the piping comes to hand shortly the job should not take long to complete.
