H.M.S. Royal Oak, which was sunk, apparently by an enemy submarine on Saturday, was one of the five Royal Sovereign class battleships laid down just be fore the last war and completed in 1916. She was designed for a speed of 23 knots and her tonnage was 29,150. She was recently re-commisisoncd. Her main armament consisted of eight 15in. guns and 12 6in. guns, eight 4in. anti-aircraft guns, and four torpedo lubes, and her armour consisted of a belt of 13in. of armour-plate with llin, in the turrets. She belonged to the 2nd Battle Squadron of the Home Fleet under the command of Rear-Admiral L. D. I. MacKinnon, C. 8., C.V.O.
