THURSDAY’S FIELDS FEW DEFECTIONS RAANA DROPS OUT DE FRIEND IN MILE By “Trenton” There were only 14 defections when acceptances closed last evening for the first day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting, which opens on Thursday next. De Friend failed to pay up in the hurdles and open “six,” but remains in the Makaraka Handicap. Raana is an absentee and he did not appear to be well treated when the handicaps appeared. The only other local horse that did not pay up was Queen’s Dream in the Hurdles and Nick’s Head Handicap, but she remains in the Roseland and Otober Hack Handicaps.
