FARMERS' EFFORT
SOWING MORE WHEAT SEASON IN OTAGO A genuine effort is being made by farmers to fall in line with the Government’s request to sow more wheat, with the result that to-day the Otago sowings are much greater than they promised to be a month ago. The acreage set down will equal that of last year. The severity of the winter retarded all farm work to such an extent that wheat sowings fell well behind, and at the beginning of September it seemed certain that the amount sown in Otago would be much less than usual. The Government’s appeal stirred farmers to make an effort to rectify this situatibn and they were helped in their determination by the sudden improvement in the weather, the conditions becoming ideal for drilling and sowing. The wheat season thus promises well. Oats arc not being sown to as great an extent as last year, but the demand for this cereal has fallen away considerably.
