STATE HATCHERIES WIDE DISTRIBUTION When trout fry liberations in the Rotorua, Taupo, Waikaremoana and Bay of Plenty districts are completed within the next month, approximately 7,000,000 fry wiil have been set free in the lakes and streams of the extensive acclimatisation district controlled 'from Rotorua by the Conservator of Fish and Game, Mr. A. Kean The Internal Affairs Department’s new hatcheries at Ngongotaha, when it completes work for the season, will have handled over 5,000,000 ova, the majority of the fry hatched from these being distributed in the Rotorua lakes area. Some consigjnents, however, have gone to the South Island and to the Waikato. The ova dealt with at Ngongotaha have been obtained from stripping at Te Wairoa (Tarawera) and from the department’s hatchery at Tokaanu. Stripping ceased in the Rotorua district about three weeks ago and the hatchery is now dealing with the final consigments of ova taken at the last strippings. To date, 3,248,000 :ry have been liberated m the lakes and streams of the Rotorua and Bay oi Plenty districts and approximately a further 2,000,000 fry have to oe liberated in this area. The Waikaremoana ha f chery will complete its work this week, when it will have dealt with 800,000 fry. All of these will be liberated in Waikarem oana and its tributary streams. Stripping is expected to be < ompleted at Tokaanu this week. Just short of 5,500,000 ova have been collected at Tokaanu this season, some of these being sent to Rotorua and Waikaremoana, and the remainder being used for Taupo distribution. Approximately 500,000 fry have been liberated in Taupo Lake and its tributary streams and approximately a further 1,000,000 have still to be distributed in that area.
