NAZIS TAKING “ALL MEASURES”
PEACE EFFORTS “TORPEDOED” WORLD FACED WITH “BLOOD BATH” NEUTRAL INTERVENTION ONLY ESCAPE PRESS TIRADE AGAINST THE ALLIES
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. 'October 14, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 13. The- Berlin correspondent oL‘ the Stockholm newspaper Tidningeri says that Herr Hitler has decided that the speech by the British Prime Minister, Air. Neville Chamberlain, in the House of Commons yesterday constituted a definite “No” to bis peace offer; therefore lie has taken all measuies to prosecute the war.” Orders have already been issued to all large Rhineland towns to prepare for evacuation. The newspaper adds that Herr Hitler’s decision followed a lengthy conference at the Chancellery at which Herr'Hitler and Nazi leaders carefully studied Mr. Chamberlain’s speech. Mr. Chamberlain was considered to have “torpedoed Herr Hitler’s peace efforts.” . Berlin therefore believed that peace was no longer possible and the responsibility for continuing the war lies with Mr. Chamberlain. Speaking in Berlin an official of the German Foreign Office said to-day that the time for negotiation had. now passed and the “real war in .the west” would begin to-night. A high Nazi authority, receiving a group of neutral journalists in Berlin to-day, said: “The world is now faced with a blood bath, for which' there As no need if the existing problems are attacked along the lines suggested by Herr Hitler. The only escape from carnage would be intervention by a neutral Power, for which purpose the United States is well qualified.” -• Ityr. Chamberlain Fiercely Assailed The official C-fcrman radio in Berlin fiercely assails Mr. Chamberlain and adds “England wants to destroy Germany and the German nation. Her warmongers want to fight Germany, so we will show them how to fight. ’ ’ The official German news agency in Berlin, in a long diatribe says: “Mr. Chamberlain left the impression .that Britain desires war, irrespective of anything Germany may say or offer.” The Yoelkscher Bocbachter says that Mr. Chamberlain’s speech was inspired by “international criminal warmongers.” _ The Allege memo Zeitung says: “Mr. Chamberlain proved his responsibility for the war.” The German official journal Diplomatische Korrespondenz declares : “Mr. Chamberlain has interpreted as weakness the goodwill which the German people, through the Fuehrer’s mouth, showed to the British and French peoples. Herr Hitler’s readiness for peace has prompted a genuine sense of European responsibility, but Mr. Chamberlain answered it by shamefully insulting the German people and their leaders.” It, adds: “The German people honestly desired to come to terms with England and even live in friendship on the basis that each should work in their own sphere undisturbed by the other. England envies the German people its benevolent fate. Filled with jealousy, England strives to calumniate the Reich for the purpose of afterwards annihilating it. Germany has not forgotten what she must expect from her Western adversaries, hut she has. learned her lesson. She knows the road she must travel in order to destroy the aims of her enemies.” ‘The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press says that well-informed Nazis predict early German-Russian consultations to which Italy may also be drawn for the purpose of a joint declaration.
