AREAS DOUBLED
VEGETABLE CROPS GISBORNE ACTIVITY TOWN AND COUNTRY Intense activity has been going on throughout the town and district recently in the planting of all kinds of vegetable crops, and one leading Gisborne nurseryman estimates that the area ip vegetable crops this year is double that of the past spring.
The acute shortage and high prices of vegetables during the past season, combined with the outbreak of war, have been responsible for the great activity, which has been going on in the back-door gardens as keenly as on the larger areas in the country.
Seeds and seedlings of all types of vegetables have been in big demand, particularly for pumpkins, tomatoes and potatoes. A very keen interest has been demonstrated in pumpkin plantings, in view of good prices received by growers of the table varieties who sent supplies to Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland during the past season.
Already the early crops are starting to come on to the market from local gardens, new potatoes and green peas having made their appearance, while from now on the spring vegetables will ■■■be coming forward in steadily increasing supply. Apparently the activity has been going on throughout New Zealand, for a Gisborne nurseryman said today that the representative of a firm with a (Dominion-wide connection stated that most nurserymen’s shops throughout the country reported sales that were fully double those a year ago.
