Severe, Gay Son, and Beaulivre Remarkable Performance When Brunhild won at Masterton on Thursday she not only broke a run of “outs” extending over a period of two years, but put up a remarkable performance to win. She had not won a race since scoring in the New Zealand Oaks of 1937. After breaking the birdcage fence, she had to be led to the barrier, and when the field went away she was left four lengths. However, she made up the leeway quickly and won decisively. Pays To Advertise Trench Fight’s 8.0 in the Wainui Handicap on the first day at Trentham rather shows that it pays to advertise, in his case that he was being retired. Less than 12 months ago he won his second Jockey Club Handicap over this distance under 9.1.
Lilies of Islay Downs
Islay Downs, who won the maiden event at Dunedin, is a three-year-old colt by Gustav from the New Zealand Oaks winner Pink Terrace (Tractor—All Pink), hence he is a half-! brother to Half Note and the jumper Tomcat and a full-brother to the two-year-old Lady Gustavo, who is a member of R. Penman’s stable at Trentham. . Janfield, who finished second to Islay Downs, is another offspring of the Solferino horse Gustavo, whose stock are beginning to show a lot of proimse. Janefield, a three-year-old filly, is well bred maternally, too, as her dam is the Sunny Lake—Droski mare Bonnie Lake, the dam of Mobile. (Defaulter's Relative Defaulter’s half-sister, by Foxlight, who was purchased at the National yearling sales at Trentham by Mr. W. J. Smith, New' South Wales, for 500 guineas, has been named Kenthelda. Trentham Appointment The Wellington Racing Club recently appointed Mr. T. Tully, Featherston, assistant to the club’s starter, Mr. W. Price, at this season’s meetings. Mr Tully is -experienced with horses and he also holds the position of clerk of Tie course to the Wairarapa Racing Club. Five Shilling Totalisator A recommendation that win-and-place totalisators with a unit of 5s or less should be installed on all racecourses in New South is ini eluded in the report of the committee established by the Government to consider the conversion of proprietary racing clubs to non-proprietary. The committee, it is understood, suggests that the recommendation should take effect as speedily as possible, considering that it will, together with other reforms dealt with in the report, have a stimulating influence on racing. A Rare Instance It forms a record in the history of the Melbourne Cup for any New Zealand oumer to have twm horses engaged in the race. Mr. J. Richardson, Dunedin, has both Royal Order and Aranui in the big event. When Aranui won at Mentone, on September 23, he was at nearly double figures and had three lengths and a . half to spare at the finish, covering a mile in 1.403Royal Order has not raced for some time, but has been in regular work at Caulfield. Unlucky 'Breeders Mr. F. T. Bucliannan, breeder and owner of Gay Parade, who is at present leased by him to his trainer, F. Christmas, had the misfortune recently to lose a colt foal by Nightmarch from Gay Sonnet, thus a brother to Gay Parade. Gay Sonnet will not be mated again until next season. Mr. D. McFarlane, Christchurch, was also unfortunate with the first foal produced by Knockfin. The youngster, a well-grown colt by Paper Money, died a few days after being foaled. Knockfin is to be again mated with the Greenback horse, now quartered at Pembroke. . .
