A NEW AMPHIBIAN
FOR S.A. AIR ARM
WARSHIP TARGET FIRING
CAPETOWN, Sept. 10.
The first' amphibian flying boat in South Africa, a craft which can accommodate itself to an aircraft carrier’s deck, to the surface of the sea, to dry 'land or to catapult, has been added'to the strength of the British Fleet Air Arm at Simonstown. It is a Supermarine Walrus I, a type extensively used by the Royal Navy for reconnaissance, spotting and bombing. The machine arrived at the Naval Dockyard in a crate recently. Its duties will consist almost exclusively in towing a canvas sleeve used for target practice by the anti-aircraft guns of warships of the African Station. ' V(/ r V.’. ' : v

When the Southampton,' the new flagship of the African Station, arrives at the Cape late this year, she will bring two Walrus amphibians,- which are part of. her equipment.'
