CHAMPION GOLFER
SECOND DEFEAT BY LOCKE BURTON LOSES 5 AND 4 Richard Burton, the open champion, was beaten for the second time in a month by A. D. (Bobby) Locke, the South African champion, at Selsdon Park, Surrey, Locke winning by 5 and 4 over 36 holes. The game was arranged before the match at Mere, in which Locke beat Burton by 10 and 9 over 72 holes, and neither player was disposed to regard the encounter as a return. Burton, in any case, was hot in fit condition to make the issue of major importance, for it was only a few days previously that he was in a nursing home undergoing a dental operation. He played listless golf in the first round, which Locke finished with a lead of six holes. Locke had been only one up at the ninth, but Burton had an attack of hooking and weak putting which caused him to lose the next six holes. Locke was round in 69 to 75. Burton played better golf in the afternoon, and going out in 34 won back two holes, but he was robbed of a half at "the tenth by being stymied to become five down again. Four halves in par .figures gave Locke the match.
