ONIONS FROM JAPAN MANY REMAIN UNSOLD STOCKS DETERIORATING Though they are the only onions available on the Auckland produce markets, a considerable portion of the Japanese shipment of 725 tons, which arrived at Auckland on July 22, remains unsold, mainly because of the refusal of Chinese and other retailers to handle this line. The stock still in hand is deteriorating rapidly, at\d men have been engaged for some time picking over crates and bagging those still in good condition for sale at the markets. Stored in city premises, the unsold stock comprises many hundreds of crates, each containing -a hundredweight. Since stocks of Californian onions were exhausted about a fortnight ago, Japanese onions have been the only type available in the markets, but the demand has been very quiet. Supplies from Canada are expected soon. Retail prices for onions, including Californian supplies still held by retailers, range from 4d to 5d a lb. The retail price of onions at this time last year was 3d a lb. AVERAGE OF 46*GNS ABERDEEN ANGUS SALE (Special to the llm - nUI.) DANNEVIRKE, this day.
