MAORI CORPS

RECRUITING BEGUN

EARLY ENROLMENTS GISBORNE'S GOOD START LIST GROWING QUICKLY As in the case of general enlistment for the Special New Zealand Military Force, the Gisborne-East Coast district promises to take a leading position with regard to recruiting for the Maori Battalion, which is being raised on terms of equality with the general forces for service in New Zealand or overseas. Though recruiting was begun only yesterday, a number of enrolments were available by the evening, and it is expected that by the end of the week there will be more than sufficient fit men available to fill the Gisborne Maori quota. Already, of course, a large number of Maoris have volunteered for service with the general forces, and some at least of these are seeking to transfer to the Maori Battalion, for which purpose they arc required to sign new enrolment forms. Included in the list of special Maori force recruits from the East Coast is a minister of religion who formerly represented the East Coast at Rugby football, and was noted as a forward of an especially rugged type.
