Since the outbreak of hostilities in Europe neutral Rumania has been a centre of interest, principally because of its agricultural, timber and mineral resources, especially oil. During the week-end, fears of a Russian invasion were reported to have been felt in the north-eastern provinces of Bukovina and Bessarabia, but assurances were given in Moscow that the Soviet had no aggressive intentions. In 1916, Rumania entered the Great War and and was over-run by the Austrians and Germans. In 1919, however, the Kingdom was restored and greatly enlarged.
