BRITISH UNREST

ABDICATION TALK RESIGNATION STORIES WARSHIP “BOMBING” AWARD FOR PILOT (Elea. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 11, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 10. Reports from Berlin state that the wildest rumours are being circulated in Germany. It was stated that the King of Great Britain was on the point of abdicating and that the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, had resigned and the Allies were seeking an armistice. Another version of the rumours is that they are to the effect that the Nazi Government has resigned. A Berlin message quotes on official German news agency announcement that Leading Aircraftsman Francke had been awarded the Iron Cross and promoted to the rank of lieutenant for "successfully destroying a British aircraft carrier.” He also received a congratulatory letter from Field Marshal Goering. Francke said that after dropping a bomb on an aircraft carrier, he saw a cloud of black smoke. The fleet was seen next day, but the aircraft carrier was not amongst them and it could not possibly have reached port. It, is stated in London that the decoration was presumably conferred for the alleged bombing of the Ark Royal, which, it has already has been made clear, never occurred.
