UNITED STATES ARMY

PLEA FOR EXPANSION LESSON IN POLAND (Reed. Oct. 11, 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 10. Speaking at an insurance convention at White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, Mr. Johnson, assistant Secretary of War, stated that Germany’s swift conquest of Poland emphasises the necessity for immediately increasing man-power and equipment in the United States Army. He expressed the view that the present militia of 400,000 regulars might find itself like Poland, inadequate in an emergency and lacking armoured cars, tanks, machine-guns, gasmasks and fire-control instruments. “Had our mechanised units met the German mechanised forces, we would have been outnumbered in armoured cars,” he said. “Light and medium tanks against them could have been raised, but few anti-tank guns. Our mechanisation programme is barely started, and must be hastenc'd.”
