FIFTY PER CENT UP

PATIENTS’ PAYMENTS THE WAIROA HOSPITAL (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “Patients’ payments show nearly a 50 per cent increase on the amount estimated for the half-year and include just over £IOOO from the social security fund for the months of July and August,” stated the report of the finance committee which was submitted at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa Hospital Board yesterday. The report wadded that payments from the fund were made very promptly and the collection of arrears had been satisfactory. “Notwithstanding that the occupancy of the hospital has risen by an average of 10 beds for the last quarter compared with the first quarter of the year, making an average for the half year of 50.5” stated the report, “the expenditure in the item ‘hospital maintenance’ is considerably below that estimated for 50 average occupied beds. However, the payments already made are mainly for the four months of the financial year and the cost will be greater as the year proceeds, due particularly to payments for the higher rate of occupied bed and higher costs.”
