“BUCKLEY’S CHANCE”
EXEMPTION FROM TAX AMATEUR ATHLETICS Some weeks ago, as the result of a request from one of the centres, Mr. H. (McCormick, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, was asked to look into the question of whether, if representations were made, the profits from athletic meetings might be exempt from amusement tax. At a recent meeting of the association’s council he reported that, although at first he had thought there was a possibility of this exemption being
granted, he was satisfied that under the existing law such exemption could not toe granted. The profits earned by swimming clubs were specially mentioned in the legislation as being exampt -from the tax, probably he thought for the reason that swimming was to some extent a sport apart. The primary object of swimming was looked upon as being of some importance, which it 'was. 'His. opinion was that it would •be futile to ask the Government for any exemption from taxation at present. ‘“’Buckley’s,” the president, Mr. R'. W. McVilly, suggested would toe the appropriate adjective to apply to the association’s chances of being granted exemption from the apyment of amusement tax. “Yes,” said iMr. 'H. I. Austad, “but if you do not ask, you never receive.” Members came to the conclusion that now would toe the wrong time to ask in any event, and accepted the opinion given by Mr. McCormick.
