Dean managed to hold off a challenge by F. Aliyne by a wheel in the 133-milc New Zealand road championship cycle race from Waimatc to Christchurch on aSturday afternoon. J. H. Newlove, who secured fastest time, rode well all the way and toward the finish drew away from his comarkers, M. M. Annett and I. Sutherland, who had accompanied him and who secured second and third fastest times, respectively. C. B. Carr, who

left his group at Rakaia and rode alone, also put up a sound showing. A strong nor’-wester was encountered for some distance near Hinds, changing to north-easterly for the last 25 miles.
