THIRSTY SOLDIERS
SOFT DRINK CANTEEN 1800 BOTTLES A NIGHT Profits from the camp canteen being run by the Internal Marketing Department at Trentham will go to the soldiers in the form of material for recreation. The canteen has been doing a tremendous business. It is “wet” only to the extent of soft drinks and non-intoxicating ales, but these have been swallowed up in great quantities—lso dozen bottles on the second night of the camp. The takings that day were more than £IOO, and this is being maintained. When there' are 1600 men in a camp each spending a few pence a day it takes no time at all to touch the £IOO mark. The average of daily sales is 2000, and most of these are made between noon and 1 p.m., and 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.—in camp time 1200 to 1300 hours and 1900 to 2100 hours. The canteen is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The soft drinking is done to the accompaniment of the carpenters saw and hammer, the canteen building interior still being incomplete. The area of the shop part is 50ft. by 22ft., and the store 20ft. by 22ft. The lowest ordinary retail price is charged for all goods—cigarettes, soft drinks, fruit, books, stationery, toilet goods, mercery, uniform polishing gear, newspapers, and most of the small things a soldier needs.
