ARTESIAN WATER

RUNNING TO WASTE Ever since additions were made to the Point Howard wharf some years ago a supply of artesian water has been running to waste, said Mr. D. Bowie, representative of the Eastbourne Borough Council, at a meeting of the Wellington City and Suburban Water Supply Board, when the necessity of control and conservation was being discussed./ The City engineer, Mr. K. E. Luke, said that he was aware that the “seal” above the water-bearing gravel had been broken by pile driving at the wharf, but he doubted whether the supply could be again sealed off. Investigations made by the late Mr. William Ferguson, when engineer to the Harbour Board, had proved that fresh water came from the bottom of the harbour as far south as Ward Island; the outflows were, it was thought, responsible for shoaling of thp harbour at certain points.
