GERMANY'S AGEING FLEET Writing in the German press, Dr. W. Hoffman, president of the Ham-burg-American Line, draws attention to the fact that more than 70 per cent of the German merchant fleet is over 10 years of age. German shipping, continues Dr. Hoffmann, can only fulfil its task if the quality of the fleet keeps up to the standards set by competitors, but the advance made by foreign .flags, as compared with pre-war times, is becoming increasingly noticeable. Between 1931 and 1938 the total of new construction for German shipping companies was one million tons less than their requirements. During the past three years, moreover, German shipyards have concentrated on foreign orders to the disadvantage of German shipping companies. These owners now had so much ground to recover that they must insist on the shipyards giving them a fixed quota.
