WELL-BRED PAIR DORIA IS BY ILIAD NOMINATIONS TO-NIGHT TURK AND HUNT CLUBS 15. v "Trenton" Both Doria ancl Gold Flight, winner and runner-up, respectively, in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin on Saturday, are both well-bred. Doria is a chestnut lilly by Iliad from that good . Chief Ruler mare Princess Doreen, winner of the Avondale and A.R.C Welcome Slakes. Gold Flight is a chestnut daughter of Nigger Minstrel and the Paper Money mare Francolin, who ran second in the McLean Stakes and has been dam previously of Night Wings and the John Grigg Stakes winner Ortyx. Debut As Hurdler Bachelor King is now undergoing a course of schooling with a view lo making his debut as a hurdler at the Whangarei meeting next month. He is stated to have shown a natural aptitude in private, and high hopes are entertained as to his ultimate success as a jumper. Nominations To-night Nominations close at 8 o’clock tonight for all events at the Poverty Bay Turf Club and Hunt Club meetings. Nothing' Amiss Although Majority has been scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, there is nothing amiss with him. Well Thought Of Nigger Boy’s connections evidently hold a high opinion of him, as he has been nominated for the Canterbury Cup at Riccarton in November. Expensive Incident Lady Don, who was disqualified for tho race she won at Geraldine because of being trained by an unlicensed person, is now in charge of J. Wallis at Oamaru. The Orari incident was expensive for her owner, as, in addition to losing the stake, the mare was weighted at Wingalui as if she had won it. Returning From Australia The Trentham trainer T. R. George 1 has left Sydney for New Zealand. lichopes, to return in time to saddle Beau Vito up at Caulfield. Defaulter and Pearl of Asia are on the same ship. Now Using Water It is not long since preparations at Trentham were being seriously interfered with by wet weather and heavy tracks. There has been a substantial change during the past week and the Water sprinklers were brought into use at the end of last week on the grass tracks. Winner of Derby Reading, the winner of the A.J.C. Derby, was bred by Messrs. A. E. Thompson and Sons, and cost his present owners 400gns. as a yearling. He is by Marconigram (a grandson of Tracery from a Lamberg mare), out of Gravure, by High Art —Encore, by Kenilworth—Linotype (dam of David). His dam is a half-sister to the Caulfield Cup winner Journal. He won four of his eight races last season and i was placed in three others. He defeated High Caste in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, but High Caste reversed the nlacings in the Champagne Stakes. This season both Reading and High Caste were unplaced in the Chelmsford Stakes, and in the Rosehill Guineas High Caste beat Reading by half a head, so there is evidently not much between these two colts.
