TIMBER SUPPLIES
RATIONALISATION AIM NEED IN EMERGENCY APPEAL BY MINISTER TRADE CO-OPERATION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. “Broadly speaking, all sections of the community actively engaged in some phase or other of the timber trade have shown excellent appreciation of the necessity for rationalising the use of timber during the present emcmgency:,” >sald the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, last night. “Sawmillers, timber merchants, importers and many builders _ and other users of timber are carefully husbanding the existing stocks of those locally-produced and imported timbers which are in relatively short supply. “At the same time a number of individual exceptions have been brought to the attention of the timber controller which indicate the necessity for the Government making an appeal to everybody concerned to exercise even more care and discrimination in the use of timber, particularly imported (timbers, which are wholly required for essential specialised uses and of heart grades of New Zealand timbers which are likewise required for permanent building and constructional work. Importance Emphasised “The importance of using up the existing stocks of timber which are normally in small demand and of concentrating upon the employment of other than heart timbers for temporary buildings, whether for defence or civilian uses, cannot be overemphasised. “The sawmilling industry is well equipped to ;meet both emergency and normal demands and no delay in the delivery of adequate supplies for cither purpose should occur in most cases. Where, however, any particularly large order has to be placed, it is suggested that any possible delay in delivery can be eliminated by reference to the conservators of forests at Auckland, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Nelson, Christchurch, Hokitika and Invercargill. These officers, together with the timber controller, are engaged on the co-ordination and distribution of large orders for both defence and civilian works whereby prompt deliveries may be effected, and likewise they should be consulted regarding the availability of special timbers for any particular purpose. “It is hoped, by the co-operation of all concerned, that any interference with the normal timber trade conditions of the community may be obviated.”
